La historia gráfica de Sevilla del siglo XX puede conocerse por las imágenes captadas por este fotoperiodista ejemplar, uno de los verdaderos maestros de las generaciones posteriores. Durante la Guerra Civil de España (1936-1939), junto a Juan José Serrano Gómez y Cecilio Sánchez del Pando, acumuló imágenes excepcionales que no han tenido en España el mismo eco que las izquierdas dieron al trabajo de Robert Capa.
Gelán, junto con Juan José Serrano Gómez y Cecilio Sánchez del Pando, fueron los continuadores de Juan Barrera Gómez y demás fotoperiodistas de finales del siglo XIX, verdaderos pioneros del reportaje gráfico periodístico. Parte principal de su obra, unos 150.000 negativos, fueron adquiridos por el Ayuntamiento (1992) y depositados en la Fototeca Municipal para su ordenación, catalogación y plena disponibilidad pública. Y otra parte, propiedad de su hijo Fernando, estuvo depositada en el Círculo de Estudios de los Distritos de Sevilla, que organizó exposiciones antológicas y preparó la publicación de estudios documentales sobre los contenidos de las fotografías, por temas, épocas y acontecimientos ciudadanos concretos. Esta institución funcionó desde 1998 hasta 2008 y preparó diversas exposiciones con fotos antiguas de Gelán en el célebre (y ya desaparecido) Mirador de Santa Justa, el Ateneo de Sevilla y el centro cívico de Nervión.
Su hijo Fernando, actual director de www.gelannoticias.com, nos dice de su padre: «Como sabes, nació en Madrid en 1902 y se vino a Sevilla para trabajar con su hermanastro Juan José Serrano. Pero se independizó y comenzó a realizar su trabajo periodístico en El Noticiero y, posteriormente, ya fijo, en La Unión. Desaparecido este medio, entró en El Correo de Andalucía. Aquí estuvo desde 1939 hasta su jubilación.
Dejó a la ciudad de Sevilla unos históricos documentos gráficos sobra la vida de la ciudad, sus personajes, sus hechos más importantes y un buen número de sucesos y actividades sociales, deportivas y lúdicas. La mayor parte del archivo de mi padre está en la Fototeca Municipal y un buen resto de los negativos, muchos de temas cofradieros, deportivos, sociales, empresariales, etc., están en mi poder y no forman parte de ninguna entidad. Y desde este centro salen multitud de fotografías de carácter histórico que ilustran publicaciones y exposiciones, a la vez que sirven de testimonios indiscutibles para colectivos profesionales e investigadores.
Como dato especial te diré que la mayoría del archivo de placas que tenía mi padre, por un problema de espacio, quedó depositado en la tienda que Serrano tuvo finalmente en la calle Zaragoza. Material que los Serrano, junto a los suyos, entregó en la Fototeca sin decir que eran de Gelán. Sin embargo, tengo información de que en la Fototeca municipal comprobaron que estas placas, numeroso material gráfico, correspondían a mi padre, porque al comprobar las imágenes con las fotos publicadas en los periódicos locales para identificar acto, fecha y personalidades y hechos, vieron que eran fotos que solo se publicaron en El Noticiero y en La Unión.
Ángel Gelán fue nombrado socio de honor del Ateneo de Sevilla y recibió en vida la Medalla del Trabajo, otorgada por el Gobierno de la nación. También recibió la Medalla de Oro de la Federación Andaluza de Fútbol entre otros galardones. Fundó la Agrupación Artística Álvarez Quintero, cuya institución, a petición de su propio creador, recibió la Medalla de la Ciudad que otorga el Ayuntamiento.
En el centenario del nacimiento de Ángel Gelán, el Ateneo de Sevilla organizó una exaltación a su memoria. Este día se solicitó al Ayuntamiento de Sevilla la dedicación de una calle para el popular e histórico reportero gráfico, avalada la petición por numerosas instituciones y medios de comunicación, así como miles de firmas de ciudadanos de Sevilla que llenaron centenares de pliegos. Esta nueva vía sevillana dedicada al genial fotoperiodista está enclavada en la zona de la Pirotecnia. La calle Ángel Gelán está abierta desde el mes de marzo de 2007, cuando se celebró el 105 aniversario de su nacimiento».
Síntesis biográfica
Inicia su andadura por el mundo fotográfico como aprendiz en el establecimiento Foto Roca de Madrid, de la mano de su hermano de madre, el reportero gráfico Juan José Serrano Gómez. Esta labor la alternaría con algunos trabajos en Hispania Films, una empresa de noticieros cinematográficos. Llegaría a publicar su primera instantánea en el periódico El Día. A los 15 años, tras la muerte de su madre, se traslada a Sevilla con Serrano y entra a trabajar como ayudante de éste en El Noticiero Sevillano, donde aprendió a desenvolverse en las tareas del laboratorio de revelado, a la vez que ejercía como corresponsal de las revistas ilustradas Nuevo Mundo y Mundo Gráfico.
Cuando en 1923 se funda el diario sevillano La Unión, entra a formar parte de la plantilla de reporteros gráficos. Allí coincide con el fotógrafo Eduardo Rodríguez Cabezas Dubois, al que reconocerá como su gran maestro. Es también en estos años cuando adopta el seudónimo por el que se le conoce en el mundillo de la fotografía, Gelán, Ángel al revés. Permanece en este rotativo hasta el estallido de la Guerra Civil, dedicándose entonces al reportaje de guerra.
Tras el final de la contienda presta sus servicios en El Correo de Andalucía donde permanecerá hasta su jubilación en 1973, o sea durante treinta y cuatro años. La temática de su obra recoge con amplitud la vida local sevillana destacando sobre el resto los reportajes dedicados a la información taurina y deportiva.
Fue miembro de honor de la Asociación Nacional de Informadores Gráficos y presidente de la agrupación teatral sevillana Álvarez Quintero. El reconocimiento público le sobrevino con la concesión de la Medalla al Mérito en el Trabajo, por sus cincuenta años de periodismo gráfico.

Gelán, along with Juan José Serrano Gómez and
Cecilio Sánchez del Pando, were the followers of Juan Barrera Gómez and other
photojournalists of the late nineteenth century, true pioneers of journalistic
graphic reporting. Main part of his work, some 150,000 negatives, were acquired
by the City Council (1992) and deposited in the Municipal Library for its arrangement,
cataloging and full public availability. And another part, property of his son
Fernando, was deposited in the Circle of Studies of the Districts of Seville,
which organized anthological exhibitions and prepared the publication of
documentary studies on the contents of the photographs, by subjects, epochs and
concrete citizen events. This institution worked from 1998 to 2008 and prepared
several exhibitions with old photos of Gelán in the famous (and now
disappeared) Mirador de Santa Justa, the Ateneo de Sevilla and the civic center

His son Fernando, current director of
www.gelannoticias.com, tells us about his father: "As you know, he was
born in Madrid in 1902 and came to Seville to work with his half-brother Juan
José Serrano. But he became independent and began to carry out his journalistic

Material that the Serrano, together with their own, delivered in the Fototeca without saying that they were from Gelán. However, I have information that in the municipal photo library they verified that these plates, numerous graphic material, corresponded to my father, because when checking the images with the photos published in the local newspapers to identify act, date and personalities and facts, they saw that They were photos that were only published in El Noticiero and La Union.
Ángel Gelán was named honorary member of the Ateneo de Sevilla and received the Medal of Work, granted by the Government of the nation. He also received the Gold Medal of the Andalusian Football Federation among other awards. Biographical synthesis
He began his journey through the photographic world as an apprentice in
the establishment of Foto Roca in Madrid, led by his mother's brother, the
photojournalist Juan José Serrano Gómez. This work would alternate with some
jobs in Hispania Films, a film news company. At the age of 15, after the death
of his mother, he moved to Seville with Serrano and went to work as his
assistant at El Noticiero Sevillano, where he learned how to handle tasks. of
the development laboratory, at the same time as correspondent of the
illustrated magazines Nuevo Mundo and Mundo Gráfico.
When in 1923 the Sevillian newspaper La Unión was founded, it became part of the staff of photojournalists. There he coincides with the photographer Eduardo Rodríguez Cabezas Dubois, whom he will recognize as his great teacher. It is also in these years when he adopts the pseudonym by which he is known in the world of photography, Gelán, Angel upside down.
