La historia de la aviación sevillana guarda algunas páginas para el Zeppelin, un modo de volar extinto que tenía parada en lo que hoy se conoce como la barriada Aeropuerto Viejo, situada al norte de la ciudad. Para seguirle el rastro a este hito hay que remontarse hasta el año 1922, fecha en la que se inicia la construcción de los hangares. En la actualidad, la zona conserva algunos anclajes y varias reminiscencias de cuando esta aeronave sobrevolaba la capital. Sevilla-Larache. La capital andaluza y la ciudad marroquí estuvieron unidas por el Zeppelin desde los años veinte hasta 1937, año en el que se produjo la tragedia del LZ 129 Hindenburg, que sufrió un incendio cuando aterrizaba en Nueva Jersey y en el que murieron 36 personas, poniendo fin a este tipo de aeronaves. De esta forma se decía adiós a una cómoda forma de viajar ya que contaba con un lujoso comedor y  habitaciones individuales para la veintena de usuarios que cruzaban el Atlántico en sus vuelos regulares. La envergadura de la aeronave era tres veces superior al tamaño de un Boeing 727.
El dirigible alemán Graf Zeppelín sobrevoló Sevilla en quince ocasiones. Sus características, más de 200 metros de longitud, hacían del vuelo, aterrizaje y despegue una atracción para los sevillanos, que iban hasta las inmediaciones de la actual barriada Aeropuerto Viejo para presenciar, desde lejos, las maniobras del gigante del aire. Aunque no era necesario ir hasta los antiguos hangares para poder ver la sombra del Zeppelin atravesar Sevilla, la primera vez que la aeronave se paseó por la ciudad fue el 29 de junio de 1929, coincidiendo con la Exposición Iberoamericana. El 16 de abril de 1930 hace escala por primera vez en el nuevo aeropuerto, en mitad de la ruta a la ciudad alemana de Friedrichshafen.
La aeronave sobrevoló Sevilla a unos doscientos metros de altura, el doble de lo que mide la Giralda (104 metros), lo que permitía unas vistas privilegiadas desde las zonas altas de ciudad. Varios fotógrafos de la época inmortalizaron la imagen de la aeronave proyectando su sombra sobre los monumentos de la ciudad.
Una sombra que duró poco. Las dificultades económicas de la concesionaria da al traste con el proyecto del aeropuerto sevillano y la empresa Deustche Zeppelli llega a un acuerdo en 1932 con el Ayuntamiento para instalar el anclaje en Tablada.
